Integrating a Product Configurator into Magento – Step by Step

You sell products with many variants in your Magento store — and the standard Configurable Products are hitting their limits? Too many combinations, no real-time price calculation, no dependencies between attributes? Then you need a product configurator. And the good news: you don't need an expensive agency or a months-long project.

In this article, we show you how integrating a product configurator into Magento with configento.app works in practice.

Why Magento Standard Variants Often Fall Short

Magento comes with Configurable Products out of the box — products where customers can choose from predefined attributes like color or size. This works well for products with a few clear variants. Problems arise when:

  • Millions of combinations are possible (e.g. blinds made to measure with width × height × color × material × operation)
  • Dependencies between attributes exist (e.g. certain colors only available in certain sizes)
  • Real-time price calculation is needed beyond simple surcharges
  • Individual measurements need to be entered as free-text fields
  • Bills of materials need to be automatically generated for production

The Architecture: How Does It Work Together?

configento.app is a cloud SaaS solution that integrates via a plugin into Magento 1 and Magento 2 (Adobe Commerce). The configuration logic runs in the cloud, the integration into the store happens seamlessly via Magento Custom Options. The data flow looks like this:

  1. Customer opens product page in the Magento store
  2. configento.app loads the configuration interface directly on the product detail page
  3. Customer selects attributes — price updates in real time
  4. Customer adds the product to the cart
  5. Order proceeds normally through Magento checkout
  6. Configuration data is saved as Magento standard attributes and passed to the ERP system

Step 1: Install Plugin from the Magento Marketplace

The configento.app plugin is available in the official Magento Marketplace. Installation works like any other Magento plugin — via Composer or Marketplace download. Afterward, you'll find a new menu item in your Magento admin panel: the visual management interface of configento.app.

Step 2: Create a Component

A "component" in configento.app is the basic framework of your configurator. You define which attributes your product has, what data type each attribute has (dropdown, radio button, free-text field, number), which values are available, and how the configurator looks — via drag & drop and WYSIWYG editor, no coding required.

Step 3: Define the Rule Set

In the visual rule editor, you define which combinations are valid:

  • "If color = Anthracite, then surface = High Gloss is not available"
  • "If width > 300cm, then material A is not selectable"
  • "If product = Double unit, then minimum depth = 500cm"

Step 4: Set Up Price Calculation

configento.app supports surcharges per attribute value, Excel and CSV price lists, and formulas for complex calculations.

Step 5: Link Product in Magento

Connect the component with an existing Magento product via Custom Options. Once saved, the configurator immediately appears on the product detail page.

Step 6: ERP Integration and Bills of Materials

configento.app saves all configuration data as Magento standard attributes and automatically generates a bill of materials for each configuration, directly transferable to your ERP system.

Conclusion: Easier Than You Think

Integrating a product configurator into Magento doesn't have to be a big project. With configento.app, you install a plugin, set up your components in the visual interface and link them to your products.
